Diploma of Islamic Studies
A two-year journey through the foundations of Islamic theology — preparing you to deepen your own practice and to serve your congregation as an Assistant Imam.

About this course
The 11114NAT Diploma of Islamic Studies provides a pathway to deepen your understanding of Islamic theology and to perform the support functions associated with serving in an Islamic congregation. Across eight core units you will study Islamic Creed, individual and congregational jurisprudence, Quranic studies, Hadeeth, the life of the Prophet Mohammad ﷺ, Islamic ethics, and community engagement.
You’ll develop the knowledge and skills to advise others in the principles of Shariah, assist in congregational prayers and Islamic ceremonies, lead Quranic study sessions, teach Islamic scripture, and design community engagement experiences — all under the supervision and guidance of qualified Islamic scholars and Imams.
What you’ll study — the eight core units
All eight core units must be completed to achieve the full qualification. A Statement of Attainment is issued for any individual unit completed where the full qualification is not.
Entry requirements
To enrol in the Diploma of Islamic Studies, you must:
- be over 16 years of age;
- have a foundation understanding of basic Islamic teachings and principles, verified by a letter of recommendation from a practising and recognised Imam or an authorised Islamic Centre representative;
- hold a current Working With Children verification applicable in the Australian state or territory in which you reside and work; and
- have a level of language, literacy and numeracy sufficient to read and interpret complex theological texts and to prepare written reports demonstrating your knowledge and understanding.
As part of enrolment we conduct a pre-training review to confirm the course is suitable for you and to identify any support or reasonable adjustment you may need.
How you’ll be assessed
Assessment is conducted using a variety of methods over time to gather valid evidence of your competence, and may include direct observation, written and oral questions, case studies and scenarios, assignments and projects, portfolios and log-book evidence, oral presentations and journals. Skills are demonstrated in an Islamic worship setting such as a mosque, or in a simulated environment that replicates one.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is offered to all applicants at the time of enrolment — see Recognition & credit transfer.
How it’s delivered
The supervised component of this course is delivered internally, face-to-face, using a combination of classroom-based learning and an Islamic worship setting such as a mosque or equivalent. You can expect around 7 hours of face-to-face training and assessment per week over 80 weeks, alongside an average of 8 hours per week of unsupervised study and practice (prayers, assignments and revision). Language and literacy support is available before and during training.
Pathways
On successful completion, the Diploma of Islamic Studies can provide a pathway into higher education in theological studies, as well as recognition by ANIC to serve as an Assistant Imam and to teach scripture in approved schools.
